Apple iOS 10 will roll out soon to all users, as Cupertino gets ready to introduce the new iPhone 7 on September 7. Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus will come with iOS 10 running on them, although public betas of the new iOS are available for users to download and test them.
Apple iOS 10 brings changes to iMessage, Maps, Memories, Safari and Apple Pay. Siri is now more intelligent and open to third-party developers. Here’s a look at the highlights of iOS 10, which will roll out to all Apple iPhone users in mid-September:
iMessages
iMessages gets new features like animations, invisible ink, personalised handwritten notes and automatic emoji suggestions and is supposed to be a more fun, Snapchat-style app now. The Cupertino giant has introduced animations like balloons, confetti or fireworks. Apple iMessage users will also be able to send music links from Apple Music to their friends who can open the link in-app itself.
Apple iMessage will also get its own App Store, and developers can create apps for iMessage, which will offer special functions like send payments or schedule dinner or a movie. iMessage’s role is set to expand and get bigger in iOS 10, and Apple claims this is one of the most used apps on their devices.
Siri
Siri will get smarter and third-party developers can now use the voice-assistant for their apps as well. SiriKit helps developers to design their apps to work with Siri for functions like ride-booking, place an order, etc.
Redesigned Maps
Maps in iOS 10 will be simpler and more intuitive to use. Maps will also open to developers to enable booking cabs via Uber and Lyft, without leaving the app. It will also offer directions to users where they are most likely to go next, based on their routine or appointments.
Memories in Photos
Memories in Photos app will enable users to rediscover their forgotten occasions from photo library by automatically surfacing them into Memories. There’s also a Memory Movie, that automatically edits a movie with theme music, titles, and cinematic transitions. Apple says Memories uses AI, object recognition, etc to put together and organise these photos.
iOS becomes more intelligent
Apple is making it easier and quicker for users to access information in iOS 10. For example, ‘Raise to Wake’ automatically wakes the screen as the iPhone is raised. This makes it easier for users to view notifications, right from the Lock screen. Users can access Notifications, Today view and Control Center with just a swipe or a press. Notifications are more interactive and can be accessed from Locked Screen itself.
In our review blog of iOS 10 beta, we said notifications are now better, from a design as well as practicality angle. We really liked the clock app, which now has a Bedtime tab. The Bedtime Tab decides when you should sleep and sends you an alert before this time. We’ll have to wait and see when Apple rolls out the new OS.
